Why does it smell like nail polish remover?

That sharp, chemical smell is acetone, and it means one thing: your starter finished its food and then kept going. It isn't dead, it's starving. It happens mostly when you feed too little, wait too long, or when your kitchen has warmed up and your schedule hasn't caught up. Two or three feeds at 1:2:2 will turn it around. If it still smells like that afterwards, feed it more often rather than more.
