Mould, or just hooch?

A dark, thin layer of liquid on top is hooch — alcohol, and completely normal. A greyish film is fine too. What is not fine: coloured patches in pink, orange or green, or anything fuzzy. That's mould, and it goes deeper than what you can see. Scooping it off does not help. Throw the whole jar out, wash it with hot water and soap, and start again. It costs you two weeks and it's worth it: this is the one point where this product doesn't look for a way around it and simply says no.
